PEONIES IN THE SPRING TIME

You can usually see the tell tale signs of spring when you see the pink and red eyes breaking ground. The peonies have survived yet another winter!

The peonies are sprouting now and it’s delightful to see stems developing from those pink eyes. The very early to early varieties have as much as 12 inches of growth.

It is also delightful to see the plump leaf buds forming on the tree peonies! They’ve weathered the fall conditions and are doing beautifully.

Thanksgiving at Peony Farm

Thanksgiving. We have much to give thanks for

Our Lord sees fit to bless us with good health, ongoing growth of the business, loyal following – both local and all over the USA, repeat customers, great vendors, great crop, improving efficiencies , and improved cash flow.

On the health side, I’ve had a successful skin cancer surgery, cataract surgery and I feel that I am on target in being “diabetes free” by February 2015.

On the relationship side, we are communicating better and that is a big plus!

This year, I found my way back to God and learning much to show my love and appreciation for all that He has provided for me now and in the past.

Thank you dear Lord for all the blessings.

During the months of May and June, we open the gates so that visitors can come and visit the peonies in bloom. Visitors from the Sequim Chamber of Commerce, local residents’ visiting family and friends, people visiting the Olympic Peninsula or the Twilight site of Edward and Bella – our customers, their family and visitors delight us with stories about their own peonies.

I’ve always felt that a visit to the Peony Farm is a way to de-stress, because of the comments we receive. They delight in the peace and beauty surrounding the farm, the fragrance wafting in the air from the peony blossoms and the variety of peonies. They are amazed to discover that there are some many varieties available.

Even non-peony lovers go home with a plant or two to bring back with them memories of their visit.

And, surprise of surprise, upon visiting the Butchart Garden in Victoria, BC, they discovered that Peony Farm is only 20 miles from the Port Angeles ferry! Definitely, Peony Farm is becoming a destination venue for people visiting the Olympic Peninsula along with Olympic National Park, Olympic National Forest, Hoh Rain Forest – check out venues at Destination at the Olympic Peninsula.

Peonies as Cut Flowers for your Home

The peony blooming season is over and I found myself going over the pictures I took (I love taking pictures of my peonies in bloom!) and to my delight, discovered that I took several pictures of the few arrangements I made for the Peony Farm. You see, the season was underway and I was busy with the farm’s visitors that I forgot to make floral arrangements!

Thought I’d post it here to illustrate that the beauty and boldness of the peonies more than made up for a lack of talent on flower arrangements on my part. The simplest arrangement is made pretty with lots of pizzazz by the flowers themselves. I used greens growing at the farm for the arrangements.

I was thinking that I see a lot of peony postcards with buckets filled with various colors of peonies. You and I could do that easily do and it’d definitely make a pretty picture.

New Peony Varieties Coming Soon

Peony Farm, Sequim, WA is expecting delivery of beautiful, new varieties of peonies mid September this year. This addition is in inline with Peony Farm’s goal to make more varieties of peonies available locally.

Varieties like Amalia Olson, Henry Bockstoce, Lavon and Petticoat Flounce are among the herbaceous peonies; Cora Louise is the newest itoh peony addition; Ruffled Sunset and Godaishu tops the list among the Tree Peonies.

Petticoat Flounce is creating quite a stir and is much in demand on the Pre-Order. Bartzella Itoh peony, however, with its lush shrub and big,vibrant yellow flowers captured a lot of people’s attention while Red Charm peony wowed the visitors with its extraordinary luscious red flowers.

Peonies On Parade

On another note, Peony Farm experienced quite a turnout in this years’ Peony on Parade. The visitors were rewarded with a view of the beautiful, dazzling peonies in bloom. Although the peonies were late in blooming due to the weather, visitors just came back to visit when the blooms finally arrived. And they were rewarded to see quite a variety of peonies all in one place. Peony Farm carries peonies in all flower form – single, japanese, semi-double, double and bomb. And it was rewarding for the visitors to see such a variety locally, all in one place.

Peony Farm, WA 2011 Season

Peony Farm opens the Peony Farm 2011 Season with a Contest.

To celebrate our second peony season, we thought it’d be fun to hear from you about how peonies affected your lives, your mother, your grandmother, your sibling, your aunt, your father. It’d be fun if you can find pictures of yourself or them with the peonies in the background. So, we are running a contest called “Lasting Memories and Peonies”

Contest rules are posted on the website: www.ILovePeonies.com And, you and your friends will be the judge in this particular contest because you are going to post your entries on our facebook page at: www.facebook.com/peonyfarm
What will you get if you win? As much as $200 worth of peonies from Peony Farm!

The Gardening Bug is Back!

Peony Lovers and Gardeners are poring over their catalogs; checking out the internet for their 2011 planting. It doesn’t seem that long ago when the phones stopped ringing, and here we are getting re-energized by the enthusiasm of peony lovers. They wanted to reserve their coveted peony root early!

Orders are starting to come in, people calling to see if the farm is open and others calling about the Lasting Memories & Peonies contest (already!).

Our newest arrival of Peonies are slowly getting uploaded to the website So far, we have 14 new peonies uploaded on the site. Click Peony Farm’s 2011 New Peony Additions to check them out.

We’ve also revamped the site. For those of you who likes to browse by color, we’ve added the Catalog by Color Peonies listed by Colorl ). Florists are already commenting on how much better they like this arrangement (get the pun?).

Peony Farm’s Events

So far this year, we have the Soroptimist Gala Garden Show and the Peonies on Parade scheduled. Events to be added include Using Peonies for Flower Arrangements, How to Divide Peonies and a video production somewhere down the line.

This year is a Door of Opportunities for us at Peony Farm.

Our 1st year gave us a glimpse at the opportunities and possibilities of how we can be better. So we have set certrain goals for ourselves. First one is Expediting the Peony Division process.
Second, Improve our Order Fulfillment procews.
Third, Continue to fulfil our customers’ expectation and level of satisfaction.
Fourth, Increase our presence in the Peony world.
and I am sure there are many more areas that we will notice as the season gets on full swing.

In the meantime, I am looking to more photo ops with my peonies!

Fall at Happy Valley Grower

Sssh, sssh! The plants are asleep. At least that’s what it seems Fall in the Garden
like. And yet, this is the time of the year when the garden is ablaze with colors. Literally. With golds, rust, yellows, brown purples, orange,reddish green. Wonderful mix of colors – transformation that happens when fall is here.

This is also the time of the year when some plants are storing energy to re-awaken come spring and burst into yet again, another display of vibrant colors. Just wait. Your peonies will give you a riot of colors come spring! And you don’t even have to treat it tenderly like roses (and I have over 30 varieties in my garden). All the spraying, and cleaning, and pruning, and fertilizing, and on, and on.

By the way, Benjamin, thank you for giving us CZ, our cat. This is her first year anniversary with us. My home is totally transformed from absolutely no cats to having CZ sleep in my bed! She occasionally lets me pet her, but for the most part, she is a very independent cat. Here she is.
